History of InREA
InREA was founded in Indianapolis at Green Way Supply on Wednesday evening January 16, 2008 on the eve of a hearing on HB 1102 to establish a Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) for Indiana electric utilities. The hearing was scheduled before the House Commerce and Utilities Committee chaired by Rep. Dave Crooks (D-Washington). Founding members of the association testified in support of this proposed legislation as well as proposed legislation on net metering and interconnection rules.

Creation of Indiana Renew Blog
To facilitate dissemination of information about renewable energy issues pending before the Indiana General Assembly and the U.S. Congress, the Indiana Renew Blog was created by Laura Ann Arnold. To review recent legislative activity on renewable energy at the state and federal level, please visit www.indianarenew.blogspot.com.
DRAFT MISSION STATEMENT:
Indiana Renewable Energy Association (InREA) is established for the purpose of representing businesses which produce and consumers who use renewable energy throughout the state of Indiana.
It is the mission of InREA to:
1. Educate the general public on the availability and efficacy/economic viability/cost effectiveness of renewable energy;
2. Promote environmental sustainability;
3. Engage with political leaders on the vital importance of maintaining fair and open markets.
The members of InREA believe that a marketplace that is open to goods, services and ideas best serves technological advancement, environmental health, economic development and the public interest of Indiana.
InREA DRAFT DEFINITION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
InREA’s current working draft definition of renewable energy resources includes:
- wind energy;
- solar energy;
- photovoltaic cells and panels;
- dedicated crops grown for energy production;
- organic waste biomass;
- hydropower not involving the construction of new damns and micro hydro;
- fuel cells;
- methane systems that convert waste products including animal, food, and plant waste, into electricity;
- ocean current or wave energy
- geothermal energy
- Combined heat and power systems that use natural gas or renewable energy resources as feedstock and achieve at least seventy percent (70%) overall efficiency
- End use energy efficiency improvements
Simpler alternative definition: Renewable energy is any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy, such as biomass, solar, wind, tidal, wave, geothermal and hydroelectric power that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel.

InREA Plans to Petition ASES to Become State Chapter
InREA has contacted the American Solar Energy Association (see www.ases.org) about becoming a State Chapter. InREA is planning to contact all the current members of ASES who are in the State of Indiana. Eric Cotton will also be participating in the State Chapters Caucus meeting to be held in conjunction with Solar 2008 in San Diego.
We also plan to include a survey to determine current interests and preferences for programs and activities.
